Will someone know I blocked them?

Whether someone is notified when you block them on social media or messaging apps depends on the platform. Some sites and apps will alert a user that they have been blocked, while others will simply make the blocker seem unreachable, without indicating why.

Facebook

If you block someone on Facebook, that person will not get any notification that they have been blocked. From their perspective, they will simply no longer be able to see your profile or posts. If they try to search for you, your profile will not come up in their results. They will also not be able to start a conversation with you or add you as a friend.

The only way the blocked person might realize they have been blocked is if they notice your profile and posts have suddenly disappeared from their view. Even then, Facebook does not make it obvious that a block has occurred. The platform is designed to quietly remove blocked people from your experience, without notifying them.

Instagram

Much like Facebook, if you block someone on Instagram, that person will not get notified about it. Your profile will simply disappear from their account. They will no longer be able to view your posts or search for your account. If you blocked them from a joint chat, the chat will still appear for them but without your messages.

The only indication to the blocked user is that your profile is suddenly inaccessible. There is no warning message that they have been blocked. However, it may be apparent if you completely vanish from their view without an explanation.

Twitter

If you block someone on Twitter, they will not receive any notification that you have blocked them. Similar to other platforms, your tweets and profile simply become invisible to the blocked user without any warning. The only change from their perspective is that you seem to have disappeared.

However, Twitter does allow you to mute users instead of fully blocking them. If you mute someone, they will get a notification that you have muted them, indicating you will no longer see their content in your feed and conversations.

WhatsApp

If you block someone on WhatsApp, they will immediately know because your profile photo and “last seen” status will disappear from their app. A blocked contact becomes completely invisible. Unlike other platforms, WhatsApp makes it very clear to users that they have been blocked.

In group chats, a blocked person will still be able to see and send messages in the group, but your messages will appear as “You” instead of your name. They will know they have been blocked by a specific person due to your vague identifier in the chat.

Messenger

If you block someone on Facebook Messenger, whether from your contacts or in a group chat, the person will not receive any notification. Your messages will simply disappear from their view. The only indication they may get is that your profile photo vanishes from their contacts list.

Blocking someone on Messenger makes you completely invisible to that person. They will be unaware they are blocked unless they notice conversations with you have abruptly ceased.

Snapchat

On Snapchat, blocking a user removes them from your friends list and makes your Stories invisible to them. However, Snapchat does notify users when they have been blocked. A blocked contact will see a message that they can no longer view your Stories or interact with you on the app.

So unlike other platforms, Snapchat makes it clear to users that they have been blocked. The blocked user will not get any details beyond a general notification that they can no longer see your profile or communicate with you.

Skype

If you block a contact on Skype, they will get a notification that you have blocked them. When they try to search for your profile or start a chat conversation, a message will pop up alerting them that they have been blocked and can no longer message you.

Skype clearly indicates to blocked users that they can no longer interact with you. Beyond this notification, no other details are provided. But the blocked person will definitively know they have lost access to your profile and cannot contact you.

Gmail

Blocking someone in Gmail does not notify the user or indicate in any way that they have been blocked. From their end, your messages will simply be automatically archived or sent to spam as if nothing has changed.

Gmail’s blocking feature is solely designed to prevent you from seeing emails from certain addresses. The senders have no indication they have been blocked and will be unaware unless you tell them.

iMessage

There is no direct way to block someone on iMessage. However, you can block their phone number which removes your ability to send and receive iMessages and phone calls with that person. They will not receive any notification that you blocked their number.

By blocking a number on an iPhone, you make yourself invisible and inaccessible to that person on iMessage. They will simply see messages remaining undelivered to you without understanding why.

Discord

If you block someone on Discord, either in a chat server or from your DM contacts, the user will get a notice that you have blocked them. They will not be able to send you any more messages or view your profile.

Discord clearly indicates to users that they have been blocked and restricts their ability to interact with you on the platform. Besides the notification, no other details about the block are provided.

Telegram

Telegram has two options – you can block users so they are unable to contact you, or report their account which limits their ability to contact any other users. In either case, they will get a notification that their access has been restricted.

With a normal block, the person will know specifically that you blocked them. If you report them, they will get a general notice that their account has encountered limitations but won’t know who reported them.

Signal

If you block a contact on Signal, the app does not notify them in any way. You simply become unreachable and invisible from the blocked user’s end. The only indication they may get is if your profile photo disappears from any mutual group chats.

In essence, Signal blocks work secretly and do not reveal to users that they have been barred from contacting you. The block cuts off communication without alerting the blocked party.

Zoom

On Zoom’s messaging platform, blocked users get notified with a message that the account owner has blocked communication with them. Their messages will no longer deliver and they cannot view your profile.

Zoom makes it clear when a user has been blocked from contacting someone. Beyond the notification, no other details are provided to the blocked party about the reasons behind the block.

Slack

Slack has two block options – restrict someone from joining your channels or domains, or block them from messaging you directly. In either case, the user will get a notification they have been blocked.

So Slack makes blocked users aware of their status and limits their access accordingly. The notification does not provide a specific reason for the block.

Reddit

Reddit does not have an explicit block feature, but you can block a user which removes their ability to message or interact with your posts. They will not get any notification about being blocked.

From the blocked user’s perspective, you have simply ignored or become unresponsive to them. Reddit does not indicate to users if they have been blocked by someone else.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn allows you to block other users from viewing your profile or contacting you. The blocked user will not receive any notification about this. Your profile will simply disappear from their view.

The only way a blocked person may realize is if they notice your profile is inaccessible without explanation. LinkedIn does not alert users that they have been blocked.

Pinterest

If you block someone on Pinterest, that person will not get notified or be able to tell in any way that they have been blocked. Your boards and pins will simply be hidden from their view without explanation.

Pinterest’s blocking feature is discreet and totally invisible to the blocked user. They will be unaware unless you inform them that they can no longer access your content.

Tinder

If you block or unmatch someone on Tinder, they will not receive any notification. Your profile will simply disappear from their matches as if you never interacted.

Tinder’s blocking feature is designed to let you silently remove contacts without informing them they have lost access to you. The blocked person will be unaware unless they try to view your profile and see it is gone.

Bumble

Bumble has a similar blocking mechanism to Tinder. If you block a match, they will not get any notice. Your profile will vanish from their view so they cannot interact with you.

In effect, blocking makes you totally invisible to the other user. Bumble’s blocking is anonymous and impossible for the blocked match to detect.

Snapchat

On Snapchat, blocking a user removes them from your friends list and makes your Stories invisible to them. However, Snapchat does notify users when they have been blocked. A blocked contact will see a message that they can no longer view your Stories or interact with you on the app.

Conclusion

In summary, whether a blocked user is notified depends entirely on the platform:

  • On Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Gmail and iMessage, blocks happen secretly without any notice to the blocked user.
  • Platforms like WhatsApp, Snapchat, Skype, Discord, Telegram, Zoom, Slack, and Twitter alert users if they have been blocked.
  • Other sites like Reddit, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tinder, and Bumble make blocking invisible so the user has no indication they have been blocked.

The notification policies are designed around each platform’s approach to privacy and communication. In general, the more transparent platforms notify blocked users while apps focused on anonymity block contacts silently without warning.
