Why is WhatsApp not picking up new contacts?

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps, used by over 2 billion people worldwide. However, many users have experienced issues with WhatsApp not registering new contacts added to their phone’s address book. There are a few potential reasons why your new WhatsApp contacts may not be showing up.

Your Contacts Haven’t Registered on WhatsApp

The most common reason new contacts don’t show up on WhatsApp is because they haven’t actually registered and activated their WhatsApp account yet. WhatsApp needs your contacts to have an active account associated with their phone number in order to establish a connection. If your new contact hasn’t yet downloaded WhatsApp and gone through the activation process, their name and number won’t show up in your contacts list within the app.

How to Fix It

Have the new contact download WhatsApp either from the App Store or Google Play Store. Then have them register using their phone number. Once they’ve activated their account, their contact should sync to your contacts list within 24-48 hours, as long as you have their number saved in your phone’s address book.

Your Contacts List Hasn’t Synced

Another common reason new numbers aren’t showing up is because your WhatsApp contacts list hasn’t synced recently with your phone’s contacts. WhatsApp periodically pulls in numbers and names from your address book so that it stays up to date. However, this sync doesn’t always happen automatically when you add new contacts on your phone.

How to Fix It

You can force WhatsApp to manually sync your contacts list with these steps:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the More Options icon (3 dots in top right)
  2. Go to Settings > Contacts > Refresh
  3. Tap Refresh again on the popup message

This will initiate a sync and check for any new numbers or contact details to import from your phone’s address book. The new contacts should then start appearing within your WhatsApp contacts list within a few minutes.

Your Contacts Have You Blocked

If a contact has blocked you within WhatsApp, they will essentially disappear from your contacts list in the app. Their name and profile picture will be removed. When this happens, even if you have their number saved in your phone, they won’t show up as a WhatsApp contact because of the block.

How to Fix It

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do on your end if someone has blocked you on WhatsApp. The contact will need to unblock you from their end for their name and profile to reappear in your contacts list. If you think you may have been blocked, reach out to the contact through another method like SMS, phone call, or email to confirm.

Your Phone Contacts List is Corrupted

In some cases, your phone’s contacts list itself may have become corrupted or out of sync with your various online accounts like iCloud or Google Contacts. This can prevent WhatsApp from being able to properly pull in the data and sync contacts.

How to Fix It

Try the following steps to troubleshoot your phone’s contacts list and refresh it:

  1. Open phone settings and go to the contacts or address book menu
  2. Turn off any syncing with online accounts temporarily
  3. Delete the contacts list from your phone
  4. Restart your phone
  5. Re-sync your online accounts like Google or iCloud to restore contacts
  6. Re-open WhatsApp and refresh contacts as explained above

This forces your phone to fully re-download a fresh copy of your contacts list which can resolve any conflicts or corrupt data.

Your Phone Number or Contact Number Changed

If you or your new contact recently changed phone numbers, this can cause a delay in WhatsApp registering the new number, since it relies on your address book contacts matching up.

How to Fix It

Double check that the new number is correctly saved in your phone’s address book under the correct contact name. Make sure your own number listed in your phone under your name is also correct. WhatsApp may take a few days to register any recently changed numbers or contacts after validating the changes.

You Have Reached the WhatsApp Contact Limit

WhatsApp actually has a limit on the maximum number of contacts you can have in the app. The limit is currently 4096 contacts. If for some reason you’ve reached that upper limit, any newly added contacts won’t appear.

How to Fix It

Try removing old, unused contacts from your address book. You can also use WhatsApp’s Contacts Cleanup feature to remove contacts that are not WhatsApp users, which frees up space for new contacts to sync.

Your Phone’s OS is Outdated

Having an outdated version of your phone’s operating system can lead to syncing issues with apps like WhatsApp. Make sure your phone is updated to the latest OS version to prevent discrepancies with your contacts.

How to Fix It

On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for and install the latest iOS version. On Android, go to Settings > System > System Update. Keep your OS up-to-date for best performance.

Conclusion

Here are some key points to summarize why new WhatsApp contacts may not be showing up:

  • Confirm the contact has an activated WhatsApp account
  • Manually refresh your WhatsApp contacts list
  • Check if you’ve been blocked by the contact
  • Reset your phone’s contacts list
  • Make sure number changes are updated in your contacts
  • Remove unused contacts if you’ve reached the 4096 limit
  • Update your phone’s OS to the latest version

Following these troubleshooting steps should help get your new WhatsApp contacts to appear. Be patient as it may take some time for new numbers to fully sync across various apps and services. If issues continue, you may need to contact WhatsApp support for additional help.
