Why does WhatsApp PC keep logging me out?

It can be frustrating when WhatsApp Web or Desktop unexpectedly logs you out, forcing you to scan the QR code again to log back in. There are a few potential reasons why this happens.

Your Phone Lost Internet Connection

WhatsApp Web/Desktop requires an active internet connection on your paired mobile device to stay logged in. If your phone loses internet connectivity for any reason, such as switching between WiFi and mobile data, it will cause WhatsApp Web/Desktop to log out.

To avoid this, make sure your phone has a stable internet connection when using WhatsApp Web/Desktop. Try disabling battery saver modes, connecting to reliable WiFi, and closing other apps that may interfere with connectivity.

Your Phone’s WhatsApp Got Closed

Closing the WhatsApp app on your phone, either intentionally or accidentally, will log you out of WhatsApp Web/Desktop. This is because the WhatsApp app on your phone needs to stay open and connected in the background to keep the web/desktop version logged in.

Make sure to keep the WhatsApp app open on your phone while using WhatsApp Web/Desktop. On Android, you can enable battery optimizations to allow WhatsApp to run continuously in the background. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom edge to bring up your open apps and leave WhatsApp running.

You Logged Into WhatsApp on Another Device

Logging into WhatsApp Web/Desktop on another device will automatically log you out of any existing sessions. WhatsApp allows connecting to only one device at a time, so if you open WhatsApp Web on your computer after already being logged in on another computer, it will log you out of the previous session.

Make sure to close WhatsApp Web/Desktop on any existing logged in devices before trying to log in on a new device. Also double check that someone else didn’t log into your WhatsApp account on another device, causing your session to end.

It’s Been Idle For Too Long

WhatsApp Web/Desktop sessions automatically expire after a period of inactivity. On the web version, sessions last about 7 days without interacting with the page. On the desktop app, sessions last about 30 minutes of inactivity. This is done for security reasons.

If you leave WhatsApp Web or Desktop idle for too long, it will require re-scanning the QR code to log back in. Try to actively use the service periodically if you want to stay logged in, or re-scan the code when prompted after returning to an idle session.

Your Phone’s Date or Time Changed

WhatsApp keys your sessions to your phone’s current date and time. If your phone’s date or time changes significantly, either manually or due to automatic network updates, it will cause WhatsApp Web/Desktop to log out unexpectedly.

Avoid manually changing your phone’s date and time while using WhatsApp Web/Desktop. If they get updated automatically, just re-scan the QR code to log back in with the correct details.

There’s a Problem With Your Phone’s WhatsApp

In some cases, issues with your phone’s WhatsApp installation itself can interfere with WhatsApp Web/Desktop sessions. Glitches, corrupt data, or unauthorized modifications may cause connectivity problems.

If you frequently get logged out from WhatsApp Web/Desktop, try reinstalling WhatsApp on your phone or clearing its cache/data. Make sure your phone isn’t rooted/jailbroken and does not have unsupported mods.

Your Account Logged In Elsewhere

If your WhatsApp account is logged into another device, like another phone, it will automatically log you out of WhatsApp Web/Desktop. Each WhatsApp account can only stay logged into one device at a time.

Check your account security and make sure you recognize all devices logged into your account. Log out of your account on devices you don’t use anymore to stop them force closing your WhatsApp Web/Desktop sessions.

How to Fix WhatsApp Web/Desktop Logging Out

Here are some steps you can take to prevent WhatsApp Web/Desktop from unexpectedly logging out:

  • Ensure your phone has a stable, high-speed internet connection
  • Keep the WhatsApp app open and running on your phone
  • Close WhatsApp Web/Desktop sessions on other devices
  • Don’t let your computer/phone sit idle for too long
  • Check your phone’s date, time, and WhatsApp settings
  • Log out of unknown devices logged into your WhatsApp account
  • Scan the QR code again if logged out unexpectedly

Conclusion

WhatsApp Web/Desktop logging out usually comes down to connectivity issues, conflicts between devices, or inactivity timeouts. The tips above can help troubleshoot and prevent unexpected logouts. Make sure your phone stays connected, only log in on one device, and don’t let sessions idle too long. Re-scanning the QR code will instantly log you back in if you do get logged out.
